I truly enjoyed reading Blink and The Tipping Point, so when I saw that Malcolm Gladwell had a new book, Outliers, I rushed out to buy it. What I found best about his book is the number of uplifting pieces of information that were also actionable. For example, that after 10,000 hours working at a profession/task, one could become an expert. Keeping in mind that 10k hours is some years, the ability to turn this into an action is pretty limited. That being said, Ash and I at The Launch Factory have each passed 10,000 hours working with start-ups, so I guess we are experts!
I cannot say that I agree with everything he states. For example I have inwardly been confident of my mathematical abilities since grade 3 (Steven Dubin always finished ahead of me, but other than that, I held my own), and I am not Asian. Maybe my sister is right, great-grand mother did fool-around.
All that being said, this is not only a good read, but starts to offset some of the "hurry-up and change jobs" syndromes that people like Tom Peters started back in the 1980s.
